Several Home Owner "Prep" Habits To Avoid!
Don’t Settle for a “Surface-Level” Stucco Job
Before hiring a stucco contractor based on price alone, ask if they include these
5 Critical Protection Steps.
At
AandG Stucco LLC, these are not “extras” — they are our standard.
Several homeowner "prep" habits actually make stucco repairs harder or less effective. Here are the most important ones to avoid.
1. Hiding evidence of water problems
- Do not bleach, pressure‑wash, or repaint over stains or hairline cracks right before an inspection. That can hide moisture trails and make it harder to see the true problem.
- Avoid caulking every crack yourself; you may seal water into the wall and remove clues the contractor needs to diagnose hidden damage.
2. Doing partial DIY "fixes" first
- Skipping a professional moisture/rot check and just smearing patch over cracks is a big mistake; it can trap moisture behind the stucco.
- Using the wrong patch material (spackle, concrete, generic exterior filler) creates weak spots that have to be ground out before a proper repair.
3. Ignoring access and safety
- Not moving grills, furniture, or vehicles away from walls forces the crew to work around obstacles, which can lead to missed areas or extra time and cost.
- Leaving dogs loose in the yard or locked gates closed can delay the crew and sometimes force a reschedule.
4. Disturbing the wall from inside
- Hammering on interior walls, opening up drywall, or cutting from the inside right before exterior stucco work can crack or loosen more stucco.
- It is better to let the stucco contractor coordinate any interior exploratory openings with their exterior repairs.
5. Rushing decisions on finishes
- Waiting until the last minute to choose color/texture (or not checking HOA rules) can stall work or lead to mismatched patches.
- Trying to "pre‑touch‑up" paint yourself
